MARY MULHOLLAND
Mary Mulholland was born in Folkestone, England in 1949 and emigrated to New Zealand with her family three years later. She graduated with a Diploma of Fine and Applied Arts from Dunedin Art School in 1972. Mary has been painting for over four decades and professionally since 2004.
From her first exhibition in 1973 in the Otago Museum foyer, from which the Hocken Library purchased one of her paintings, through to exhibitions inChristchurch, Queenstown, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Dunedin, Whanganui, Palmerston North and many other galleries and institutions across the country, Mary has always painted flowers, making the subject her own. As critiqued,
“Mulholland’s paintings are not just flower paintings but dramatic representationsof complex and highly structured blooms. Her subject is altered by dynamic cropping, exaggerated scale and the compression of foreground and background. The imagebecoming almost abstracted emphasising colour and form.”
In Mary’s own words, “I am drawn always to walk where flowers are in bloom, their being goes straight to my soul.”
Mary’s work continues to find collectors throughout New Zealand andinternationally.

JOHN MULHOLLAND
John Mulholland was born in Folkestone, England in 1951 and emigrated to New Zealand with his family two years later. He studied art theory, art education and architecture at the University of Canterbury whilst working full time as a structural designer and draughtsman.
John’s lifelong involvement with the creative arts has embraced the dynamics of change and renewal. Working across a diverse range of media with sculpture, found objects, painting, print and photography, his work has evolved into an articulation of space, shape and language within a conceptual framework. In John’swords,
“I walked the hill to nest a found-stone high in the yoke of a Puriri - a companion for this tree. And each day I pass by, companions to me.”
Creating artwork for exhibitions, private and public commissions, in support of communities, organisations and schools, his work continues to find corporate and private collectors throughout New Zealand.
